What to do after a deep tissue massage

At Cadence Physiotherapy, our massage therapists offer deep tissue massage treatment for those who are local to Scarborough, ON and beyond.

This massage technique can be a great choice for those who are experiencing muscle soreness or a sports injury, or those who are looking to rest and recover from exercise or injury and get some pain relief (we also love a deep tissue massage to decrease stress and for optimal self-care!)

In this blog, we'll go over what to do after you've come to our clinic for a deep tissue massage.

What is a deep tissue massage?

This technique is one of many different types of massages (we also offer Swedish massage and myofascial release) and it's important to decide what type of massage would work best for not only what symptoms you're experiencing, but also your preferences.

Our goal is to make sure that you are comfortable. If you are a person who doesn't prefer deep pressure, we would choose a different technique for you.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage that focuses on slow, deep pressure with a goal of reaching and treating our deepest layers of muscle, tendons, and fascia.

It is different than Swedish massage, which focuses on using more light to medium pressure.

What to expect after a deep tissue massage

A deep tissue massage can be used to treat many different symptoms and conditions such as aches and pains, chronic pain, inflammation, sports injuries, and is used to reduce pain, improve mobility, increase blood flow, reducing inflammation, improve the mobility of scar tissue, and provide general relaxation.

After a deep tissue massage, you may feel drowsy (that's the relaxation piece!), so it's ideal to take it easy after your deep tissue massage, so we wouldn't recommend heavy lifting or intense exercise.

Outside of avoiding intense exercise, we recommend general wellness principles such as:

  • Drink enough water and stay hydrated

  • Keep moving (you don't need to rest for the remainder of the day)

  • You may have some soreness after your massage that will usually subside within 24-48 hours, but if you are experiencing soreness be sure to keep moving the area. Cold compresses may help as well.

  • Some find heat to be beneficial after their deep tissue massages (heat wraps, pads, etc.)

There is no such thing as a perfect post-massage routine, as everyone is different. We would expect that you continue with your daily life as normal after your massage session and just keep what we mentioned above in mind.
